Site: Men's Health & Prostate Screening, USA
Description:
Prostate cancer is now the most common noncutaneous malignancy in American men. Fortunately, the number of men presenting with potentially curable disease has increased significantly in recent years largely due to the use of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for early detection and monitoring of men with prostate cancer combined with heightened public and professional education concerning the
importance of this disease. Unfortunately, minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged men still present with more aggressive disease patterns due to lack of access to appropriate screening and education. This initiative, started in July of 2009, searches out opportunities to increase awareness of prostate cancer early detection and numerous other specific men’s health issues such as erectile dysfunction, infertility, urinary leakage, enlarged prostate, and bloody urine. Additionally, this project addresses aspects of preventative medicine such as nutrition, exercise, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and colon cancer screening from a perspective that is often overlooked – the man’s perspective. After these health issues are discussed, if the individual requires further specific follow-up, our foundation directs the patient back to their primary physician, local area specialists, or to the UT Southwestern Department of Urology.
If you desire for this Men’s Health and Prostate Screening Initiative to screen men in your community, please contact us at info@wasmithfoundation.org. This is free of charge, however generous donations are deeply appreciated in order to continue to fund this project and the many others currently conducted by the WA Smith Foundation.
